Godoy CruzMIRA (Monitoring and Identification of Waste in Ditches)

Description of the issue:

Ditches are part of the irrigation system and cultural heritage of the city of Godoy Cruz.

The project intends to answer severe problems of standing water where waste is dumped. This problem affects the lives of the inhabitants and generates overflows of water and floods that damage the property and the infrastructure of the city, and also entails plagues, unpleasant odors, contamination of crops, flood risks during the summer season, thereby endangering all citizens.

89% of the waste in ditches corresponds to disposable plastic containers.

The Municipality CANNOT give an immediate answer to the problematic in some critic aspects. The critic aspects are identified by means of long municipal routes and neighborly complaints, and even though the municipal logistics is very organized, no immediate solution nor efficient service can be provided to the neighborly complaints. The issues are mitigated, but cannot be prevented.

General aim:

By solving the issue of waste in ditches and their environment, the standard of living of the citizens will improve immediately, inviting them to reconsider the public spaces in front of their properties, the squares and parks.

By avoiding residue carry-over and the subsequent floods, not only the private property is protected, but also the pedestrian and road infrastructure, the stoplight and lighting networks, the power lines, drinking water and the sewage system. Overflows from channels are reduced during flooding season. Plague, and rodent and insects which are disease vectors will decrease, such as cholera, and dengue and zika fevers, and unpleasant odors will be eliminated.

Godoy Cruz MIRA system provides citizens with an instant and dynamic communication tool with a mobile app, a means that will permit to grant benefits with more contents in time. Moreover, the citizen will have a participatory and organizational social structure available.

The citizen will be educated as to prevention culture, and the community will be an active subject as inspector as to control and maintenance of the cleanliness of irrigation channels, and sanitation of their environments, and by knowing their general rights and duties as users of the service.

Resolution strategy:

The awareness raised in the citizens, through strategies managed by political actors, will be reflected in the qualification of the city. The result will be a more care for and cleaner scenario, with better landscape views, better health conditions, inhabitability, and infrastructures in good shape that invite to be toured.

The correct functioning of the water network will permit the water to flow, improving its volume and its quality, favoring irrigation to public trees and green areas, and contributing to the purification of the air and to a fresher microclimate.

The arrival of water to Treatment Plants for human consumption and to productive land, in a sufficient amount and not contaminated, would become efficient for human consumption and would make crops more productive.

There would be less plagues of insects and rodent in the ditches and in the households of the inhabitants of the city. The use of insecticides and other chemical products that destruct the ozone layer would be reduced.

We will optimize the municipal resources and reinvest savings so as to improve the services related to waste in SUW separation stations and PET recycling, recovering said investments in furniture for public spaces, squares and daycare centers, thereby obtaining more satisfaction and citizen collaboration.
