Forest sides suitable for urban/rural sustainable development

Issue description:

The current agriculture and livestock production system involves continuous usage of agrochemical. These applications are made on soil and by air and may cause biocides drifts towards urban populations, that put in risk the population, animals and plants health. Good agriculture and livestock practices, such as crops rotation, limits this risks, but this application is not frequent. In addition, certain farming activities make dust and aerial pollution that may be moved to urban areas. Besides, the urban population increment over the rural population caused by migrations implicates that only 8% of the province are rural populations and an uneven growth in many locations. Arteaga perimeter involves a 10.000 meters’ range, where 5.000 of them are feasible to afforest.

General objective:

Boost the usage of non-timber trees to generate forestation as a contribution to a better life quality and sustainable develop of Arteaga citizens. Is intended to foster forest development in the outskirts of the city, non-timber forest masses to delimitate productive spaces. Promote non-timbering species production. Support and promote knowledge access through continuous advising, technical assistance, human resources training, school’s enrichment, developing new products and technics. Promote population awareness regarding to environmental issues, urban hygiene and possible solutions. Promote participation, gathering and compromise of shared responsibilities with intermediate associations, cooperative business, non-governmental organizations and people related to the issue. Foster the articulation between similar enterprises or relate with others jurisdictions and programs of national, provincial and communal develops. Investigate/experiment/validate technologies about multilayer and multipurpose forest sides.

Resolution strategy:

Is planned, in surrounded areas deprived of trees, to plant a 4 lines forest side, spaced 2 x 2, and where there are existing trees, add a two lines barrier (1160 meters). This will make a structure of at least 3 stratums (central high, medium and low outlying). The species to be used will be disposed according to its growing type. Garden centers will donate plants, and some of them will be produced in the growing place from selected seeds. Measuring’s of drift mitigation that trees could make will be made in, at least, three different times, that will be evaluated and published as validated technical information, and also carbon sequestration and water consumption, in addition of other factors. This works will be made by INTA technicians, together with municipal personnel. A garden center for regrowth of selected species will be assembled. In addition, the workers crew and local schools will be trained about good foresting practices and maintenance internships will train people in the task.
