Solar highways shake the world's infrastructure

From United States to remote places in China new solar road projects are being considered, some of them are already underway.

Solar Roadways.

In 2006 the couple formed by Julie and Scott Brusaw founded the brand called Solar Roadways.  The idea came up to Julie when trying to become aware of environment , in this sense Scott applied his engineering knowledge and both gave a sense to their vision and turn it into reality by means of modular solar panels covered in tempered glass

According to creators there are almost 53 thousand square kilometers of roads, parking lots, vehicle entrances, playgrounds, sidewalks or bike lanes in the United States and from which you can get a benefit if solar panels are being considered.  Brusaw’s first experiment has been carried out in Idaho.

This idea could generate around 14,085 billion kWh of electricity in a year, if only 4 peak generation hours are taken into account each day calculated for northern United States.  For southern USA electricity generation would increase exponentially.

Wattway in Japan, France and the United States.

For almost half a year, creation initiatives of Colas group have begun to launch their pilot projects in Japan, France and  United States. Wattway premise,a Colas group product, , is that  “one kilometer paved with Wattway can provide electricity to feed street lighting in a city of 5,000 inhabitants "

France.

Since 2016 Colas group has implemented its pilot projects in France where it kicked-off, creating the first solar road in the world.  The initial kilometer of this type of roads has been launched in Tourouvre-au-Perche, built with Wattway . This road consists of almost 3,000 solar panels  capable of generating clean energy to power town's public lighting.

Georgia.

Months after establishing itself in France, Wattway system arrived in the United States where 50 meters of solar road were installed in Georgia near the border with Alabama. This  road has been part of a project presented by the Ray C. Anderson Foundation who has almost 30 kilometers of surface for testing technologies that work with renewable energy.

The project has achieved recognition.  Road  section has been highlighted by its premise in terms of safeguarding lives because "it has reflective points that use color to communicate important data for drivers in real time, such as ice presence (black), thick fog, later accident or erratic drivers. It has also Smart Road Dot system made with solar LED lights and backup battery, as well as  autonomous functions enabled by a mesh network that acts in real time "

Japan.

Wattway's participation in Japan goes hand in hand with a US brand store, 7 / Eleven.

They have presented in the Asian country almost 60 cutting-edge technologies in pursuit of environmental impact reduction, improving work environment of employees, among others upgrades. The pilot project was presented and inaugurated almost half a year ago.

China.

The Asian giant has also entered the race to make clean freeways based on renewable energies. In this particular case in Jinan, the Chinese one-kilometer solar highway has been carried out by the company Qilu Transportation Development Group.

This solar highway is formed by several layers. One is made of solar panels, a lower insulation and the upper layer is made of transparent concrete.

An area of 5,875 square meters is covered in both lanes, as well as an emergency lane. According to data system, the Chinese solar highway can generate one million kWh of clean energy per year.

Bike lanes can also generate clean energy.

Such is the case of  Holland, a country that has a bicycle lane network that connects almost all its territory.

Solaroad Company installed the first one in Krommenie. After a year of use the company confirmed that this bicycle network can generate 70 kWh per square meter, enough energy to power three houses. This result exceeded creators expectations.
